A BRIEF HISTORY OF VESPRA HILLS GOLF CLUB...

The Frost family built and operated Vespra Hills Golf Club until 2022.  The land which is the core of Vespra Hills was once the home of the Pratt family. The

Homestead 9 is so named because it is where Mac Frost’s wife, Beth (nee Pratt) grew up.

Mac and Beth’s daughter, Cinder, managed the Club from 2003 - 2013. In 2013, Dave Caldwell, who had been the Club’s superintendent since 2003, took over the management of Vespra Hills Golf Club.

In February 2022, Dave Caldwell, along with his business partner Tom Jarvis, purchased the Club from the Frost family.

Dave, along with Cinder, was involved in the design and construction of the Still Valley nine, the Pro Shop and the Club House which opened for the 2010 season. Dave intends to continue many of the traditions that Cinder had and honour her efforts of a “family business” with a warm, welcoming atmosphere at Vespra Hills.

In spring of 2024, Vespra Hills joined the ClubLink family of managed Clubs, adding another layer of membership options and benefits for Members.

Sand Hills

Golfers who can claim accuracy and "course management" skills will have a definite advantage on this nine. The Sand Hills 9 meanders through mature trees on the high ridges of the property. The sense of peace and the spectacular scenery make facing the challenges a pleasure. There are three Par 3 holes on this nine, rendering it a par 35. Each of the Par threes are unique unto themselves and the course still provides a good test of golf. The subsoil is about 80% sand, making for good drainage and a healthy environment for turf.

The finishing hole on this nine is a Par 4 dog leg left. A drive to "position A" leaves you with a panoramic view, and a downhill shot to the green. The first of the three nines to be completed, the Sand Hills 9 offers echoes of old fashioned course design, with modern day techniques employed to keep playing conditions at their best.

Homestead

On the Homestead 9, the old family farm house was located near Wilson Drive, just to the right and rear of the 8th green. The first few holes lead you through some lovely trees, and then you find yourself playing a few holes built into the gentle slopes of more open terrain. Still, it's not a good idea to stray too far from the intended path, since generous fescue areas and strategically placed bunkers can soon find you suffering the consequences of a wicked slice or hook. Some challenging "reads" on the greens will keep you awake on this Par 35 layout.

The finishing hole, affectionately called "The Chute" leads you back towards the clubhouse, through the trees, and over a creek to an elevated green. Not overly long, it can still "sneak up on you" if you get a little wild on direction.

As with our other nines, the yardage signs at the tees are carved into boulders that appeared as we sculpted the land for the course, and benches are made from the trees that had to come down. We made every effort to preserve the maximum possible number of the fully mature hardwoods, and evergreens throughout the property. An atmosphere of natural beauty permeates the surroundings, as you enjoy what are among the best greens and course conditions in the area.

Still Valley

The Still Valley 9 is the youngest of our nines, opened to our members in 2006, it is a Par 36, built in the valley land at the North end of the property. The building of this nine was overseen by Cinder Warren, following many of the principles of golf course design learned from her Dad, Mac Frost. The project was, in truth, a team effort, and a credit to the talents of our Club Manager/Course Superintendent Dave Caldwell, and some deft touches from the land shapers. Influenced by the land itself, some traditional Scottish landscapes, as well as sand features akin to those that Cinder had seen on courses she had played in Los Cabos, we have sometimes referred to this layout as "Carnoustie meets Mexico". A challenging course, as the slopes indicate, it received rave reviews from the rating teams and other knowledgeable pros, and golf officials. Though perhaps somewhat intimidating at first, it is becoming a favourite for the players that love a challenge, and enjoy its unique characteristics.

All of our 27 holes have 4 sets of tee blocks, rated and sloped for both men and women. With 4 choices of tees to play, there is no lack of variety of golf experiences for our members at Vespra Hills
